Ontario seniors age 65 who are low risk need a baseline bone density test (BMD).

Individuals at low risk are eligible for a baseline BMD test and a second BMD test 36 months after the baseline. Third and subsequent BMD tests for low-risk individuals are insured by OHIP once every 60 months.

Are you at high risk for Osteoporosis?

Individuals regardless of age that have any of the following:

Fragility fractures

Use of high-risk medications (oral steriod use)

Hypogonadism or menopause before age 45

 Malabsorption syndromes (chrons/ulcerative colitis)

 Chronic inflammatory conditions

Primary hyperparathyroidism

Other disorders strongly associated with rapid bone loss or fractures .

 

Important:  All adults >50 years should take 1000 IU of Vitamin D. Calcium requirements depend on your dietary intake.
