Vaccine Catch Up

Vaccine Clinics will be held on specific days. These are vaccine only appointments with the nurse.

Do not request to see the doctor at the vaccine clinic.

 Non-OHIP covered vaccines must be picked up from pharmacy & brought with to vaccine appointment.

 

Shingles Vaccination

Shingles vaccine is recommended for all adults over 50 years of age.

 Ontario seniors age 65 to 70 years (i.e., from the 65th birthday to the day prior to the 71st birthday) are eligible for the 2-dose publicly funded Shingrix® series, provided they have not received the Zostavax® II vaccine through the Ontario publicly funded shingles immunization program.

The series needs to be completed before the 71st birthday. Seniors outside the eligibility criteria can purchase the vaccine privately.

1949 to 1952 who missed the opportunity to receive the publicly funded shingles vaccine are eligible to receive Shingrix® and complete the 2-dose series by December 31, 2023.

Shingrix® is a recombinant, adjuvanted subunit vaccine that was authorized for use in Canada in October 2017 as a two-dose series for individuals 50 years of age and older for the prevention of herpes zoster (HZ).

Shingrix® is administered intramuscularly as a two-dose schedule 2 to 6 months apart.

  

        Pneumonia Vaccination

All adults age 65 + are publicly funded coverage for Pneumovax 23 for free.

Adults age 50 + can get Prevnar 13. This not covered by Ontario, but 3rd party insurance or out of pocket expense $150-180.

If you want the Prevnar 13 vaccine, you must request a rx be sent to your pharmacy. It can be given by a pharmacist or at our clinic.

***Special population risk: If you have cancer it is highly recommended you get a Prevnar 13 booster.

There is a specific high risk list of health conditions that are OHIP eligible for free Prevnar 13. It is suggested to get Prevnar 13 first then get a booster with Pneumovax 23 later for prevention of pneumonia - see link to review further.

Tetanus Bootser

All adults require a tetanus booster every 10 years. There are 2 types: Tdap and Td.

The Tdap is given once to boost adults for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis

It is also given to pregnant women in their third trimester to reduce the transmission of whooping cough. It is recommended to close family members of a pregnant women to ensure they are up to date
